Q.
Is Riffin.com legal?
A. Absolutely. We worked our tails off to become an approved online distributor for hundreds of music labels, including majors and independents.
Q.
How is Riffin.com different than other online services?
A. The secret's in the sauce. Riffin.com has what just happened in the last day on the music scene and what was happening twenty years ago. They're thrown into a blender and mixed by professionals. Every Rifflist™ has kickin' song-level reviews. 30-second audio clips also come with every playlist. And we have the jewel case art. Right there. You can purchase the CD or, when available, the download. It's up to you.
Q.
How many songs are available on Riffin.com?
A. Riffin.com has roughly the same number of digital downloads as other services. But we don't stop there. If a Webjockey has some song cranking in his or her mind and wants it in a playlist — say, a remixed Freestyle Professors or Blind Faith's Sea of Joy — but it's not in our massive database of over 4 million songs, the Webjockey can still write about that song and include it in the playlist.
Q.
What audio format and DRM (Digital Rights Management) are used for digital downloads?
A. Right now Microsoft WMA format is used and Microsoft DRM. We're working on something for IPOD users… stay iTuned.
Q.
What media players and handheld devices are supported?
A. Digital downloads must be opened first using Windows Media Player 9 or above in order to register the license. After that, you can play your songs through any WMA compatible media player (including Napster, Rhapsody, MusicMatch, Real, Winamp, etc.) or transfer them to any MP3 player that supports WMA. We expect to be "Plays for Sure" certified sometime soon.
Users of Apple iPods can look forward to Riffin.com support in the near future.
Q.
Why are some songs not available for digital download?
A. Ah, the million dollar question. Every music recording requires a clearance from all rights holders before it can be released for online distribution. That takes time. Every week we'll be adding more music, both new releases and old recordings as the rights are cleared. We're as eager to get them up there as you are.
Q.
Does Riffin.com have an "all you can eat" monthly subscription plan?
Q.
What is a Webjockey?
A. Anyone who can reel off snappy one-liners and lives and jives for music can be a Webjockey. Signing up as a Community Webjockey is free of charge. Here at Riffin' we believe that music is the great equalizer. Professionals and amateurs alike can attract a following and earn some money along the way.
Q.
How to I get listed as a Professional Webjockey?
A. Radio DJs and Club DJs are encouraged to list as Pro Webjockeys. If you earn your living by spinning, Riffin.com can spread your message about your musical interests even farther.
Q.
How much can a Webjockey earn?
A. For now, both Pro Webjockeys and Community Webjockeys earn between four and five cents per song, each time a visitor clicks on a link in a playlist written by that Webjockey, completes the sale, and eLegal Arts, Inc. collects the funds without chargeback, cancellation, or finding of fraud. How much you earn depends on how big your existing fan base is, and what kind of attention and reputation you can gain here at Riffin.com. It's all about the success of your playlist. Don't forget to promote your playlists and your Webjockey profile by linking to them from other sites.
Q.
What violations should Webjockeys be careful about?
A. Webjockeys should never send unsolicited e-mail to people you don't know, inviting them to visit your Webjockey page, playlists, or any other Riffin.com URL. Spam wasn't a good idea in the seventies unless you were a Monty Python fan and thirty years later it still isn't a good idea.
NEVER post any content (text, images, audio, video, etc.) unless a) you create it yourself; b) you have explicit rights to use it; or, c) you are 100% sure it is in the public domain.
NEVER post offensive material, including nudity, profanity, hate, illicit substances, illegal activities.
Also, don't talk smack about artists, labels, or other Webjockeys - this not only violates the User Agreement, it also violates the style guide. Remember, Riffin' is about "what's good."
Q.
Why does it cost money to sign up as a Pro Webjockey?
A. It doesn't. Yet. Pro Webjockeys can get greater exposure on the site, production assistance in building and managing playlists, co-promotion opportunities for live events, an offline marketing kit, and premium features on their Webjockey page. Like an Appearances calendar to let online fans know where and when they are spinning live. If you are a professional, ask us how we can help: Webjockeys [@] Riffin [.] com.
Q.
How are In-house Webjockeys chosen?
A. In-house Webjockeys are professional writers on staff at eLegal Arts. If you think you'd make a good In-house Webjockey, drop us a line at Webjockeys [@] Riffin [.] com. Tell us what kind of music you think is off the chain, and include links to pieces you've written.
Q.
What are the "community rules" at Riffin.com?
A. Riffin' is a commercial platform for music fanatics. The only reason to be here is serious sharing of music taste and opinion. Music is the conversation. It's all about the playlist. We want you to be who you are. And we want to know who you are. That's why we let all Webjockeys place a link on their Webjockey page that goes directly to their personal site. In return, please link back from your personal profile on SG, MOC, Tribe, DJList, Match, etc.- or even to your blog on religion, politics, and the Kama Sutra. But here on Riffin.com, we are all about the music.
Q.
What labels are represented on Riffin.com?
A. Our four and a half million song sample library (audio clips, jewelcase art, song data) includes the entire North American catalog: essentially all labels, including collections of independent artists such as CD Baby, etc. If you know of a label that sells music in the U.S. market and is not represented here, please tell them to contact us at info@riffin.com. If you are your own label, same deal.
Q.
Can I post my own music on Riffin.com?
A. If your music is not distributed by a label, and you would like to post clips of individual songs to your own playlists, that is something any Webjockey can do. Simply click "Add song not in Library" when building or editing a playlist. Although these songs will not be available for other Webjockeys to put on playlists, visitors will see the songs on your playlists, listen to the clips, and click through for more info on your own site. It's free advertising for your own music.
Q.
How are Webjockeys paid?
A. For any month in which an end-of-month balance of "Webjockey earnings" in your Riffin' account is $100 or greater, eLegal Arts, Inc. will mail a check to your legal name and address, assuming we can reach you in advance to capture your social security number. eLegal Arts will also issue a Form 1099 when earnings exceed $600.00 in any calendar year. We cannot pay you if we cannot contact you. Please make sure your actual info is listed in you're My Account area.
Webjockeys may choose to spend their credits to buy digital downloads from Riffin.com. To do this, select "Convert to Riffin' Dollars" on your My Riffin' Page. If you are closing out your Webjockey account and have less than $100 due, click "Send Check." A $5.00 processing charge will apply for all checks. It helps keep us in coffee.
