DJ Tiesto, rated as the world's top DJ, continues to keep fans ecstatic.
DJ Tiesto is best known for his trance-tastic anthems, and his beats continue to rock crowds worldwide into a frantic frenzy. Starting at a small club in his homeland of the Netherlands in the early 1990's, he couldn't decide between becoming a DJ or becoming a chef. "I love cooking. It must be because of the mixing element!" Refusing to do any residencies so that he can travel the world to see all his fans, Tiesto took a few minutes to talk to Riffin'. His new album, "Elements of Life," was released in April.
Riffin': How would you describe your sound?
Tiesto: The sound of Tiësto!
Riffin': What first made you want to become a DJ?
Tiesto: I liked to share music with other people. When I was younger, I'd listen to a radio show called the "Soul Show," and to Ben Liebrand's mix show, where he would remix and cut up different tracks, and I just thought - I wanna do this!
Riffin': How did you get your start as a DJ?
Tiesto: I started out as a resident at a small club in my hometown in the Netherlands. Playing 6 hour sets 5 days a week, I had quite an experience!
Riffin': Do you have any residencies, either in the US or internationally?
Tiesto: I don't have any residencies because it's simply not doable for me. I try to reach as many fans worldwide throughout a year and therefore don't want to play at one and the same place too often.
Riffin': Who are your fans?
Tiesto: Often at my shows now, half of the people are die-hard clubbers, but the other half are people who know me from the radio, or from more mainstream gigs. It's more like they're going to a concert, so now I get a great mix of both worlds.

Riffin': How do the crowds in NY react to your music compared to other cities in the world?
Tiesto: They react really enthusiastic but that's not very different to other parts of the world =)
