A mix of house, techno, and world music, DJ Dolores' "1 Real" offers a radical and refreshing eclecticism, with songs ranging from a call to action on behalf of the proletariat to a poetic approach to the seductive talents of Jean Paul Sartre, even to a soundtrack for an X-Men episode.
With a range that truly defies categorization, DJ Dolores allows himself to experiment with all types of sounds, beats and vocals, creating an album that moves with ease between the lines of genre, era and location—but, true to DJ Dolores' goal, each track is enveloped in the shimmering haze of the heat on the streets of DJ Dolores' native Brazil.
Many artists have found themselves drawn to their hometown for inspiration. This turn inwards on DJ Dolores' part to his own personal past has also resulted in a turn outwards towards a greater vision. After a long stint of touring following his last two albums, DJ Dolores discovered inspiration for "1 Real" in the music he heard in Brasilia Teimosa, one of his hometown Recife's poor, fishing communities.
While capturing the rhythm of street life, "1 Real" manages to sound slick and modern—like a listener can place themselves simultaneously in both an urban setting and in the streets of poor Brazil quite easily. This duality that is featured time and again in "1 Real" offers a powerful commentary on the nature of colonization, both personal and national—and the nature of returning home again.
