True to their chameleon form, Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory continue to evolve with the release of "Seventh Tree." Gone are the thumping baselines and dizzying riffs of their previous albums "Supernature" and "Black Cherry." Instead, this album is an intimate look at the softer side of Goldfrapp.
This departure from their established sound was purposeful. "It’s more of a left-hand turn. Our heads were bursting with Supernature after the tour. And we thought wouldn’t it be lovely just to have a nice empty space? Not all this revved-up musical intensity. And when you think of an empty space you sometimes think of someone just strumming the guitar, gathered around a campfire. The problem is neither of us plays a guitar."
If their previous works were best explored on Ecstasy, then this one is best toured on Acid. "We kept saying ‘It’s got to be more psychedelic, more psychedelic’," relays Gregory. With that as their mantra, Goldfrapp creates ethereal soundscapes that blend the enigmatic musings of Cocteau Twins, the melodic croons of Patsy Cline and the errant shrieks of Bjork. Haunting yet inviting, mysterious yet intimate and crushing yet delicate, "Seventh Tree" defies description.
