French indie duo Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia seem to have taken a page from Claude DeBussy's composition notebook on their newest collaboration, bringing to life DeBussy's famous enigmatic statement: "Music is the space between the notes." Full of intimate whispers and industrial beats, "Pain Disappears," Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia's smashing debut, has been immediately dubbed a "crossover" album threatening transcend the barriers of genre and explode onto the wider music scene in a spark-filled flash of ethereal minimalist riffs and tech-savvy experimentalism.

String orchestra, harp and guitar all make appearances on "Pain Disappears," creating a swirling ambiance of layered orchestration that remains firmly rooted in electronic sound. With glimpses of Fujiya and Miyagi's electro-funky bass grooves and Au Revoir Simone's reverberating emotionally frank ballads, "Pain Disappears" incorporates pop, electro and micro-house in a mesmerizing ebb and flow of intimacy in sound and lyrics.

Stark mechanical beats supplement close whispers and confessions, creating a tension between person and machine that persists in different incarnations throughout the album. What is most striking about "Pain Disappears" is that Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia's distinctly minimalist songwriting is able to create an enveloping aura of sound around the listener, either shimmering in its ineffable delicacy or pulsating with popping electro-beats and melodies.

Contrast is one of the most fascinating aspects of Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia's work, which constantly reasserts its dualism through a dynamic juxtaposition of silence and sound: synth beats punctuate lingering violins, giving slower tracks a definite shape and beat, and angsty guitar riffs ground clubby electro-funk sounds into a Radiohead-esque reverie, both otherworldly and immediate. With a wealth of eclectic influences and hypnotically entrancing sound, Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia have truly created an album that bypasses the limits of a genre-restricted audience, giving these fabulous international songwriters the chance to break into the mainstream and finally receive the fame they deserve.

If you like "Pain Disappears" by Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia, then be sure to check out "Transparent Things" by Fujiya and Miyagi, "Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation" by Au Revoir Simone and "Lunatico" by Gotan Project.
