For David Brewis

If School of Language isn't a regular in the hands of hipsters' iPods yet, fans of the band Field Music had better straighten to attention. A subtle companion to Field Music's album "Tones of Town," "Sea From Shore" marks the debut of David Brewis' solo project.

School of Language starts with the basics, which come as a beat based on a slurred "a-e-i-o-u." These Sesame Street stylings comprise the first track, "Rockist Part 1," which leads to three other tracks which begin and conclude the album.

Interpreting the album title almost literally, each song leads to the next and becomes a day dreamy blur in the scope of the songwriting. Even amidst this electronic mesh, tracks like "Poor Boy" and "Disappointment '99" still arise organically.

Unarguably chill and at times contagiously poppy, Brewis' songs are downtempo rock that echo Beck and Modest Mouse, and with their dissonance, a taste of Pink Floyd.
