Artful and compelling, "The Voice of Midnight" by The Residents is a story-based musical endeavor. Adapted from the 200-year-old "Der Sandmann" by Prussian writer E.T.A. Hoffman, it chronicles the fear and madness of a childhood phantasm that continues to stalk the protagonist.
At once puzzling, engaging and portentous, this release is characteristic of the pioneering undertakings by The Residents. Recognized by the Museum of Modern Art for their films that accompanied "Commercial Album" in 1980 and for the live performance for "The Mold Trilogy," they continue to push the limits of music, performance and art.
Like a witch shrouded in a cloak, The Residents cherish their anonymity. To this day they have never granted an interview, and the personal lives of the performers remain a mystery.
