The Black Ghosts
Label: Iamsound
Release Date: July 8th, 2008
Ghetto gothic has never sounded so disco-liciously danceable. With Theo Keating AKA Touché's cold, steely riffs and floor-smashing beats, enhanced by Simian Mobile Disco’s vocalist Simon Lord, The Black Ghosts' excellent new record reveals this band's tantalizing dance-punk, electro-noir aesthetic.
The Black Ghosts' self titled debut boasts intoxicating mix of melodramatic gothic romance coated in a sexy sheen of 80s pop. Bizarre influences ranging from campy horror films to cheesy disco glam all make their cameos on The Black Ghosts' new record, creating a sound that combines daring electro-synth and what the band describes as "slightly psychotic torch songs."
Coupled with lyrics displaying just the right amount of cynicism and angst, the Black Ghosts explore the dark side of Romances Gone Wrong. What they find is a devilishly delightful brew of heart-wrenching wistfulness and fascinatingly disturbing obsession that serves as a perfect soundtrack to a dance-filled night on the town.
This album is chock-full of hits: "I Want Nothing" is easily one of the best dance tracks of the summer, reminiscent of Ladytron's more gothic moods with rippling bass lines, ethereal synth ticks and Simon's perfectly streamlined, soulful vocals. In this sure-to-be smash record, The Black Ghosts manage to do indie-electronica without sounding cliche and modern disco without sounding dumb--all while saturating their tracks in a biting irony that evokes the essence of cool.
