CAKE's sophomore effort 'Fashion Nugget' was hard to miss in the mid-90's and if you have turned on the radio, watched MTV or The Simpsons, tuned into the Sopranos or countless other outlets since, you can't escape their alt-rock sound.
The cadence and delivery of lead vocalist John McCrea's broken and deliberately paced vocals will suck you into tracks like 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps,' 'Italian Leather Sofa,' and 'Friend Is A Four Letter Word.' These songs force you into their rhythm and sound, breaking the mold and expectations. This is not to say that 'Fashion Nugget' is not commercially viable, quite the opposite, as the relentless rap delivery and backing percussion and vocals pushed 'The Distance' into homes and cars everywhere as the band's first major single.
Also a great success was CAKE's version of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive,' with McCrea capturing a distinctive sound on the cover. 'Daria' and 'Frank Sinatra' are two fresh tracks that offer signature CAKE modulation and meter though completely different sounds. With 'It's Coming Down,' CAKE infuses a ska flavor into their break up song with lyrics including "It's coming down/You lie on the floor/She's slamming the door/She's gone and she's wearing your red sweater."
The simple yearning and desperation of 'She'll Come Back To Me' are evident in McCrea's voice as he sings "All day I wait and wait/To hear her footsteps on my walkway/She never came/She never even called/She'll come back to me/She'll come back to me."
Fusing many musical styles, varying beats and unique lyricism, 'Fashion Nugget' is an alt-rock standard, and sets fans up for their third album 'Prolonging the Magic' with hits like 'Never There' and "Let Me Go.' With fourteen solid tracks, this is an album not to miss, and if you're old school, pop the cassette in your car's tape deck and drive.
