Shuggie Otis was a Soul/R&B talent who burned bright and fast, leaving behind four studio albums from 1969 to 1974. "Inspiration Information," reissued as the second volume of the World Psychedelic Classics series on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, is the definitive Otis statement, and his final release. The depth and range of the songs here represent a truly unique voice in the development of Soul music.
Displaying his musical genius, Otis plays most of the instruments on the album, except for the occasional orchestral flourishes. Despite the potential for a solitary atmosphere, Otis creates an organic, live band feel, as immediately apparent on the opening title track. A supremely funky track, "Inspiration Information" exhibits both Otis' smooth and easy-going vocals, and his prodigious guitar skills. "Island Letter" is a slow-jam highlight, featuring atypical chord progressions and a perfectly appropriate string interlude. The album features all shades of the R&B spectrum, from the bluesy "Sweet Thang" to the proto-lounge of "Aht Uh Mi Hed."
Many will recognize "Strawberry Letter 23," one of the four bonus tracks, as it was covered on a platinum-selling album by The Brothers Johnson. However, Otis' version is superior, and a great summation of his ability to blend genres. From the glockenspiel hook to the blissful guitar coda, this is one psychedelic number that gives Jimi Hendrix a run for his money. "Inspiration Information" is the kind of album that will appeal to fans of many genres, and it remains a breath of fresh air after thirty years.
